BioBusiness is an interdisciplinary course that explores the dynamic intersection of biotechnology, entrepreneurship, and business management. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how scientific innovation translates into real-world products, services, and companies that drive the global bioeconomy.

Through an integrated sequence of units—spanning biotechnology fundamentals, product development, finance, marketing, management, and operations—students will analyze case studies, engage in simulations, and complete hands-on projects that mirror real-world industry challenges. The course emphasizes both scientific literacy and business acumen, preparing students to think critically about innovation, intellectual property, ethics, and the commercialization process.

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Understand the structure and scope of the biobusiness industry across sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and environmental biotechnology.

  • Explore the processes involved in bringing a biotech product from concept to market, including research and development, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property management.

  • Develop financial literacy and marketing insight applicable to startup ventures, including funding strategies, budgeting, branding, and ethical advertising.

  • Gain practical skills in leadership, project management, operations, and quality assurance.

  • Apply cumulative knowledge in a capstone startup project, where teams design, develop, and pitch an original biotech business concept to a panel of judges.

BioBusiness provides students with both theoretical knowledge and entrepreneurial experience, cultivating the skills and mindset necessary to navigate and excel in one of the world’s most innovative and impactful industries.
